ATLAS
Adults Taking the Lead for Accessible Support
ATLAS is a simple, adult-first response for when emotions run hot. It helps you steady yourself, protect consent and safety, and guide a young person back to calm—without shame. ATLAS works even mid-meltdown and can be used anywhere: home, school, therapy.
First principle: Adults regulate first. If we’re dysregulated, children borrow our stress. When we’re steady, they can borrow our calm.
The 6 ATLAS Steps
Not a checklist - a steady rhythm
-
Slow your body. Soften your face. Say less. Your calm is the intervention.
-
Reflect what you see/hear: “Big sounds are a lot.” “You want space.” Needs come before rules.
-
Hold safety with care: “I won’t let you hit. We can stomp together or squeeze this pillow.”
-
Offer agency without overwhelm: “Floor or beanbag?” Both options are safe and realistic.
-
Pick the tiniest next step: “Let’s sip water.” “One breath together.” Micro-wins build momentum.
-
When calm returns, check consent and plan together: “What helped? What should we try next time?”
Align with parents/teachers/ therapists so support is consistent across settings.
Why it helps
ND-affirming: respects sensory load, autonomy, and different communication styles.
Shame-aware: no lectures in the red zone; we lead with safety and dignity.
Portable: short, repeatable prompts that work in real life, not just on paper.
